I love to watch the
Golf Channel on Monday nights because they have teaching pros talk about
game improvement tips, techniques and drills all night long!
But I missed it last
night so I got up early this morning to catch some of the show (they rerun
it before 7:00 a.m. on Tuesdays).
I caught super-teacher
David Leadbetter, a favorite on the Golf Channel, talking about how every
serious golfer should "keep a record of their game". I said, "Exactly!"
That's the purpose of

started to record every shot last summer - YES, I RECORDED EVERY SHOT I
TOOK - I realized that I didn't really know. Oh, I had a sense of what I needed
to work on like half wedge shots and long irons, for example. But I couldn't tell you
SPECIFICALLY what was wrong with my half wedge shots or my long
irons. Was I chunking my
wedge or hitting it thin? Was
I going right, left, short or long? I HAD NO IDEA! Some
golfers seem to be able to remember every shot in a round but I found out
quickly my memory just isn't that good. I developed a shorthand method for
recording every shot - quickly and easily.

I developed a tool
really; one that would give me the details - quickly and easily. No more going to the range just to
pound my driver. Now I knew
exactly what I needed to work on and - more importantly - why. As I was recording
every shot in order to find areas that I could work on at the range, I
started to notice in-round trends; for example, one round I realized after
the first nine that I was leaving most of my putts short and right. Armed with this information, I
concentrated on releasing the putter head and putts started to drop on the
back nine. After doing this for a
while; that is, gathering shot data and spotting in-round trends, I
